Constance wrote a great post comparing the Y Generation to Britney Spears. To compare our generation to Britney Spears is truly a big leap, but I understand the connection that she was trying to make.
I think that we are risk-takers and that we are the generation that truly has a mind of its own. We switch jobs easily and try to look out for whats best for us. We really are not loyal to our employers and want to experiment with pretty much everything. We are the new media generation and we have a much lower sense of privacy than any other generation before us. We can become self-made celebrities using YouTube, we can keep track of our hundreds of friends using Facebook, and we can publish our deepest thoughts using blogs.
I think that Britney is just a person who is garbage (sorry for being so blunt). I don’t think she truly represents our Gen because even though you can say that she is a “risk-taker,” she is weak and got caught up in the hollywood glamor.
If I had to choose a female celebrity that encompasses the Y Generation, it would be Natalie Portman. She would be a great person to represent our gen. She graduated from a distinguished university, has become an internationally known movie star, is absolutely gorgeous (had to throw that in there), and is not afraid of controversy or putting herself out there:
She is a vegetarian, advocate of animal rights, and doesn’t believe in an afterlife. She is our generation and I think the ideal female representative.

Well, Ms. Portman definitely seems clever, and more in charge of her life than Britney does!
Britney seems more like a Marilyn Monroe – known to get out of control, crazy, stay in bed for weeks, prone to drug binges – it’s just that good old Brit was exposed more widely thanks to the intranets and more.
i don’t know…but Natalie is my favorite girl. She’s smart, talented, beautiful, and has an awesome sense of humor. I remember the first time I saw this skit. It’s when I think I fell even more in love with her.

Britney represents America’s Gen Y far more than Natalie Portman. To call her “garbage” says a lot about the author’s lack of class and character. Britney is the “American Dream” personified; coming from humble beginnings and rising to be a cultural icon. She has sold over 85 million CDs worldwide, and her Elizabeth Arden perfume line is the top selling celebrity perfume seller in the world. Guess who took Britney’s position as a Broadway understudy when Britney was selected for Disney’s Mickey Mouse Club? Natalie Portman, who was born into wealth and privilege. I’ll take Britney any day, over Natalie Portman!
hahahaha… Britney is “the American Dream”!!! Give me a break. Unless you mean that the American Dream is to be “white trash garbage.”
Britney cannot sing and can’t write music. All she had was her looks and dancing, but even that is completely gone.
Britney was being “fake” in the beginning of her career. She was cute, innocent, and seemed like she was going to be an amazing role model for young girls everywhere. Then she got older, and showed her true colors.
I don’t care if she has sold over 85 million CDs! What the heck does that have to do with anything? At the end of the day, all that matters is how you finish. She is finishing as garbage. The Y Generation is not about how many CDs you can make, how much money you can make, or how much drugs or alcohol you do.
The Y Gen is about taking control of one’s life and not caring about what anyone else thinks. The Y Gen is empowered with the new media and is able to generate a movement in society. We are the generation that is empowered and can create a positive impact in the world.
Natalie Portman is intelligent, beautiful, and a great role model. She is an accomplished actress and has published many research papers. She encompasses the Y Gen perfectly.
I agree Jun. Britney is simply “white trash garbage”…period.
Katie I respectfully disagree with all your statements, and I’m sure so do a lot of people in the world. I don’t give a damn that she has sold 85 million copies of her trash, sex ridden CDs…she is indirectly preying on young girls through her CDs and other junk. She posses no respect for others (drunk driving, crashing parties, etc.)…she won’t listen and she won’t understand.
I just love what LA Police Chief Bratton said about Britney and other spoiled garbage:
“What we need is Britney Spears to stay home instead of traipsing all over town. That would solve the problem. We don’t need additional laws…. I’ve got laws coming out my ears to deal with this issue.
What you have is several young women in this town and several young men basically making fools of themselves and tying up not only my resources but the resources of the media that would do better covering legitimate stories instead of a bunch of airheads running around out there….”
