Kim responds to my “Dating an Entrepreneur” tips

by JunLoayza | View Comments |

Last week I wrote a post titled How to Keep Your Girlfriend Happy When You’re an Entrepreneur. I received a lot of positive comments from you guys which made me very happy. But, who knows better about our level of happiness than my girlfriend herself? Here is Kim talking about our relationship and how the strategies I wrote on my post are working out:

In all honesty, Kim’s very right. Your girlfriend (or boyfriend) does not want to be another event on your schedule. I think the best way to go about it is to use my strategy, but don’t let your girlfriend find out about it. Ask her to leave “Saturday from 2-5pm open” to go out. In this way, it seems spontaneous because your not necessarily commiting to a certain event and you’ll also have the surprise factor because she doesn’t know what to expect.

This is how you too can have a fun picnic at the beach!

Food and Accessories

1. Wine and cheese toolkit

Kim was walking around at a sample sale to buy some clothes when she stumbled upon this awesome wine and cheese set.  She checked it at the register and they were selling it for $5!

You can probably check your local swap meet and see if you can find a nice set for yourself.  Here is a set I found on Amazon for $20.95.

2. Non-Alcoholic Wine

You can’t drink alcohol in public, so we decided to bring the non-alcoholic wine our friend Chris got us for Christmas.  It probably wouldn’t have made a difference with police officers, but Kim is allergic to alcohol so this works perfectly for her.

My friend got it at a local wine shop so it was around $20.  I looked around online and all I could find was this 2-bottle set for $50.

3. Frisbee

This is an item that you can dig up from your garage or purchase from a swap meet.  It doesn’t have to be a frisbee; it can be a boogie board, volley ball, badminton, or pretty much anything else that you guys can actively do together.  It’s fun to lay out and get a tan, but it’s even more fun to watch your girlfriend try to catch a frisbee.

4. Deli Sandwich

Kim and I love making sandwiches.  Not only does it save money if you make it at home, but Kim’s sandwiches are the absolute best I have ever tasted.  Try out our speciatly recipe:

1. Toasted ciabatta bread
2. Four slices of fried turkey OR you can cut up roasted/fried chicken pieces and place them on the bread
3. Fried queso fresco (Translated it means “fresh cheese”.  Just ask someone in the super market that speaks Spanish and they’ll know what you mean)
4. Add lettuce, tomato, and fried sauteed onions
5. Top off with light mayo, dijon mustard, and salt and pepper
Enjoy!!!

5. Notepad

Stepping away from the laptop and getting some fresh air is the perfect way to stimulate the brain for some awesome blog posts.  It’s actually the first time I’ve done it, and I have to tell you, it feels liberating.  I’ve gone to local coffee and tea shops with my laptop to write some posts, but even then the temptation of Twitter, Gchat, and Facebook are too much for me to handle.

Hahaha, nice one. I always say that a person can balance a dozen different activities in life, but it’s almost impossible to balance a girlfriend (or boyfriend) because she will refuse to be balanced with anything.

Lets say you only have 2 things in your life, a significant other and teeth brushing (random example). If you divide it up to 50% significant other and 50% teeth brushing, the significant other would still feel that you only spend half of your time with her. And a productive person has so much more than just 2 things to do. So once you have 7 activities in life and can only devote 15% of the time for each, you are dead.

And the thing is that you WANT to spend time with her too. It requires a lot of discipline to not spend time with the significant other and be a hero, while getting in trouble all the time for that discipline. It’s like someone offering you your favorite dessert, and you really want to eat it, but because you are on a diet you work hard to hold yourself. Then the dessert provider gets pissed at you. A few days without that dessert and getting into trouble, its tough not to fall for the delicious satisfaction that may become regrettable afterwards (oh no! Too much cuddling time and a nap again!)

Luckily, some significant others are more understanding than others. They understand our schedules and try to respect our busy-ness. However, they always feel a little upset within. When you know they’re being tolerant of your schedule but are sad within, it can really kill you and make you confused about what you can do in life.

I guess we just have to make it big fast so all will be in harmony again :)

@Yu-kai - Your analogies are always fun to read. It’s understandable that they feel upset; if my girlfriend spent all her time at work and didn’t pay attention to me, I think I would feel a bit upset. It’s only natural to feel that way, but the important thing is to respect each others time and life style.

How is Amy doing?

Definately true what yu-kai said. It’s trying to make balance in a chaotic life.

@jun Dorothy should be graduating this June so we are planning some sort of trip. Haha. Should be fun. Ok going to try to find a way to move up there.

Hey Jun -

I love the idea for your follow up with Kim on your post! With personal branding, Titter, meetings, and blogging, it really is hard to balance out some semblance of a normal dating life and to hear how you’re doing from her was great!

@Caitlin - Thanks so much for your compliment!

Even though Kim says there are “Cons” to dating an entrepreneur, I’m glad she’s being honest on camera which allows everyone to better relate to us.

Look out for more videos from us coming soon!

@Rebecca - Thanks so much. She is really sweet, like a cupcake.

I’m trying to get her to do more vlogs with me…. we’ll see how this turns out.

Oh, and expect some challenges soon!

I love the “hey! what are you doing?” and the sticking out of the tongue parts. ;) You guys look so cute together. I can totally relate to the whole “Well it’s not in my google calendar” thing, though it’s a little reversed for me and my boyfriend, since I’m the entrepreneur.

Very well said Kim, and hang in there. ;)

Thanks! Yea, I’m no longer using the Google Calendar thing because I have much more time for her now.

We’re doing super well and we’re both very happy :D
